     Medications > Immunosuppressive/DMARD > Leflunomide
 

Leflunomide (Arava)

            Available:  10 mg, 20 mg, and 100 mg tablets

          Dose:  10 to 20 mg daily; 100 mg daily for 3 days may be used as a �loading dose�

          Cost:  10 mg, 30 pills = $430.00; 20 mg, 30 pills = $300.00

          Indication:  Treatment of rheumatoid arthritis; may be useful for treating other rheumatic diseases as well 

          Side effects:  The most common side effects are diarrhea, nausea, rash, and reversible thinning of the hair.  Elevation in liver enzymes can occur, and there may be a slight increased risk of respiratory infection

          Monitoring:  Blood count and liver enzymes monthly for the first 3 months, then every 2 months while taking this medication

          Important points to know:  Take this medication with food to reduce gastrointestinal side effects.  It should not be used in patients with chronic liver disease.  Influenza (injectable, not oral) and pneumococcal vaccinations should be considered if not up to date.  This drug is not to be used during pregnancy!  Women who desire to become to become pregnant should first clear this medication from their body by using a cholestyramine for 11 days.
