Teriparatide (Forteo)

Available:  750 mcg/3 mL injectable solution in a pre-filled pen delivery device

Dose:  20 mcg subcutaneous injection daily

          Cost:  1 syringe = $589.99

Indications:  Prevention and treatment of osteoporosis

Side effects:  Injection site reactions are uncommon.  Dizziness, leg cramps, bone pain and lowered blood pressure have been reported but are also infrequent.  In some individuals, teriparatide may increase blood levels or calcium or uric acid, the latter of which may precipitate attacks of gout in those who are predisposed.

Monitoring:  Bone densitometry every 1-2 years is recommended.  Blood counts, kidney function studies, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and uric acid levels should be checked periodically per discretion of your health care provider.

Important points to know:  This medication is not for use during pregnancy or while nursing.  Those diagnosed with cancer or other medical conditions that can elevate levels of calcium in the blood should also not use this medication.  Using teriparatide in combination with digoxin may increase blood levels of the latter medication.
